Bautta (baùta) The most fascinating of Venetian masks is definitely the bautta. This mask appears in many historical depictions, and served to ensure one’s anonymity, which allowed for more or less “forbidden” activities. Even clerics and nuns took advantage of masking to hide their transgressions and amorous trysts.
